Beyond Self-Discipline: Thumos Bootcamp Edition
Hey beautiful people,
Beyond Self-Discipline (BSD) will be returning in September. Daniel Kazandjian and I will host the third iteration of BSD from September 3rd to September 17th.
What is Beyond Self-Discipline?
A child of The Stoa, BSD is an experiment in practical philosophy, artistically designed to respond to and resolve the meaning crisis, the meta-crisis, and all those other nasty hyperobjects. It is a big aim, we know, but now is the time to aim big.
More practically understood, BSD is a two-week course where you design and live out your bespoke ecology of practice for one week (your ‘heaven week’). This is done with the help of some friends of virtue (your course mates).
We launched an MVP version last October, which was super fun but had some hiccups, and the official launch happened this May, which was awesome. Here are some testimonials …
When the president of my country invaded Ukraine, I made the decision to fly to another to be able to provide for myself and my loved ones. BSD didn't just help me get my rhythm back, it helped me create the lifestyle I had dreamed of for years. It caused an explosion like radioactive decay. I feel like a volcano erupting. Thumos every single day: I'm in my best physical shape, got back to my gluten/diary free diet, haven't eaten sugar in over 2 months, created my own Digital Gang with friends, made new friends of virtue and broke through that fucking glass ceiling in business and finance. I don't know how to measure the amount of gratitude I have for Peter, Daniel, and everyone involved in this miracle.
- Arsen Nizhnikov, self-actualization consultant
I haven’t come across a comparably short but incredibly profound way to deeply get to know myself in that very moment of time in a joyful, meaningful way that somewhat obviously and lightly leads to me practicing what I always wanted to do. Daniel and Peter have designed a course of such finely tuned brilliance, weaving their broad and in-depth knowledge of models and their love for truthfulness and virtue into a juicy, engaging two weeks - I am still speechless. And practicing the next practice, for as we’ve learned: the best practice is the one that leads to the next. I am forever grateful for the secret door to generous self-appreciation with a rigorous, energetic approach. You will love it!
BSD facilitated me changing my own life in a way that has stuck. So highly recommended. Peter and Daniel are a perfect duo for this work, and their warm brotherhood saturated their powerful system, creating an incredibly safe space for me to dig in deep. Love those guys and I cannot thank them enough.

Given this is an experiment, we are viewing BSD as a ‘living course’, where theory, praxis, and emphasis will slightly change with each iteration. For this iteration, we will be putting the emphasis on thumos by engaging in a ‘thumos bootcamp’.
What is a ‘Thumos Bootcamp’?
Thumos is a bridge between reason and desire, or what Paul Lee calls the “unreflected striving of what is noble.” Basically, it’s the tremendous energy you get when you are called to show off your virtue.
This is a boot camp where you show off your virtue, or to use more normie language: where you will launch something. This could be a podcast, a blog, or even launching yourself out of a job via a resignation letter. It could be small or large, but it will be customized to where you are at in your life right now. We are all sitting on one of those “one day” projects that bring us both aliveness and fear when we think about them. We cannot afford “one day” thinking anymore. Now is the time to show off your virtue.
Unlike the last two BSD cohorts, where the ecology of practice was designed by each participant, we are recommending a simple thumos regimen to be followed. This will consist of …
Waking up early
A daily cold shower
A daily breathwork session
Working out each day
Your best diet, with some kind of intermittent fasting as a strong recommendation
A “Hard No,” aka committing to NOT do at least one thing you’d rather stop doing
This will be coupled with any personal practices you want to commit to, alongside whatever work is needed to launch your project.
All live main sessions will be at 12pm EST (6pm CEST):
Saturday, September 3rd (90-180 mins)
Sunday, September 4th (90-180 mins)
Saturday, September 10th (90-180 mins)
Saturday, September 17th (90mins)
“Thumos Huddles” for September 11-15 (15 mins)
“Thumos Hustles” for September 5-9 & 11-15 (3-6 hours)
It is recommended to have the week of September 11-17 as commitment-free as possible for you to focus on BSD.
We are slowly raising BSD pricing to match other cohort-based courses. Patrons of The Stoa will be receiving a generous discount (which will be announced shortly on The Stoa’s Patreon feed) for the next few cohorts. We will also be offering a limited amount of further discounts for those in financial need. You can email thestoa at protonmail dot com to find out more about those.
Dispatches to Thumos
While BSD is situated in the market economy, my aim has always been to keep The Stoa in the gift economy, which spiritually feels like the right place for it to be. It still feels somewhat weird mixing economies on this mailing list, so we created a BSD mailing list so we can shamelessly market BSD to you!
Well, it surely will not be completely shameless, but we may experiment with some normie marketing best practices, like drip campaigns and stuff like that. I was hoping to launch this new mailing list with some authenticity though, so I will be writing mini-journals for 30 days with the following intention: invoke thumos in myself and inspire it in others. These will be called Dispatches to Thumos. A teaser …
I am called now to live in a way where my words are the sole arbiter of what my bodymind does. I want to write and speak in a muscular way, that punches with truth, and puts fire in the belly. I want my words to slap the page, ripple down to the inner depths, conjuring up the aliveness that is always here.
My Dispatches to Thumos entries start on August 3rd and will go on until the start of the course on September 3rd.
You can read them and receive marketing for BSD by signing up to the BSD mailing list here …
