Big Hairy Audacious Goal
Hey friends,
Sorry for the two cancellations this week. Both will be rescheduled.
Our first upcoming “Sensemaker in Residence” series is starting on Monday:
Series summary: We're seeing a surge in networked tribalization. It's radically changed our society and if it isn't brought under control, our future. Let's dig into this. From the origins of networked tribalization: some McLuhan, parallels to the printing press, failure of the old system (liberal order and its institutions). How networked tribalization works today. How tribes fight. How they form. How they grow. Where networked tribalization is taking us. The fight over the future of social AIs. Tribal totalitarianism and the long night.
Events for the weekend:
Memetic Mediation Campfire w/ Jason Snyder and Peter Limberg. Every Sunday @ 3:30 PM ET. RSVP here.
Stoic Breath w/ Steve Beattie. Sun @ 10:00 AM ET.RSVP here.

August 7, 2020
I should be more patient. I should be more disciplined. I should be more knowledgeable.
I like the Albert Ellis motto: don't should on yourself.
The shoulding was happening yesterday though. I was mindlessly going on social media too much, a bad habit that I want to remove. And an overall motivational fuzziness was occurring. Which is annoying, because the thumos was here in a hard way a few days ago.
I also was bummed that two events were cancelled this week, they were cancelled for legitimate reasons, but 150+ people were RSVP'd for both. An opportunity to practice Stoicism, of course, but I do want this space to be a lovely experience, in all aspects.
I was writing what now seems like a faux certainty the last few entries about being cool that The Stoa is undefined, as I am really hungry for more definition at the moment. Or maybe I need what Jim Collins calls a BHAG, which stands for a Big Hairy Audacious Goal.
These are goals that are so large, yet at the same time feasible, that you get filled with delicious urgency. As Jim Collins said: The power of the BHAG is that it gets you out of thinking too small. A great BHAG changes the time frame and simultaneously creates a sense of urgency. It’s a real paradox.
I am going on vacation next week, and with the exception of a few events, I want to have this time away from Zoom, and especially social media. I want to swim, have psychoactive experiences, and do some relaxing reading.
I sense The Stoa’s BHAG is close by and I sense more time will be needed before its paradox arrives.
