Events for the Week: Bespoke Applied Science (Ars Natura) and Bookless Club

Hey beautiful people,

The first session of The Stoa After Socrates happened today, which was fantastic. We engaged in dialogos about the sage and practiced meditation techniques John Vervaeke recommended from his new After Socrates series. Many musings were had, including this one: the next “sage is the Stoa,” and we are currently in collective midwifery. Thanks to Lizelle and Robert for doing an excellent job hosting.

Events for the week:

  • Bespoke Applied Science: Applying the Scientist's Skillset for Wisdom w/ Sebastian Marshall. December 28th, January 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th. RSVP here. 90 mins.

Sebastian Marshall’s Philosopher-in-Residence series continues, where he applies science bespoke to where we are at. Last week we discussed analysis and synthesis and engaged in a mental exercise from John Boyd. In the next session, we will be covering the following…

  • So what’s the point of philosophy, anyways?

  • Briefly, we’ll look at what were some historical answers to that.

  • At this point, Marshall would very much like to go beyond “here is some new information and some useful tools” into “how can we become wiser in the philo sophia sense, so that our core thinking is passively better, clearer, and more lucid all the time?

  • Likewise, how do we shape more of our core decisions and behavior towards the type of character and patterns of life we’d like to live?

This series feels like the old days at the Stoa Poikile, where a philosopher sat on the porch, and curious bypassers asked questions about what matters most. Attend this session if you’d like Sebastian’s help troubleshooting a challenge you are facing.

  • Bookless Club: Becoming Wise in Public w/ Peter Limberg. January 19th @ 6:00 PM ET. 90-120 mins. RSVP here.

The Bookless Club returns.

This is a series where we read or watch non-book material - Twitter threads, blogs, video essays - that surround a theme. In this session, we’ll read material to discuss leveraging one’s “second self” to become wiser (or at least less foolish).

This will be a 90-120 minute session that consists of the following…

  • A brief presentation.

  • A group discussion.

  • A collective journalling exercise.

Required reading:

  • Learn in Public by Swyx

  • Respond Presents: A Theory of Wisdom by Nathan Vanderpool

  • Second Selfing by Peter Limberg

You can watch the previous session on “terrible communities” above.

Newly posted events:

  • Rebuilding Society on Meaning w/ Joe Edelman and Ellie Hain. January 24th @ 12:00 PM ET. RSVP here.

  • Turn Your Life Into Art: Lessons in Psychomagic from the San Francisco Underground w/ Caveat Magister. January 26th @ 6:00 PM ET. RSVP here.

Wisdom gym sessions:

  • Collective Journaling. Monday to Friday. @ 8:00 AM ET. Patreon event. 90 mins.

  • Collective Presencing. Every Tuesday @ 2:00 AM ET. RSVP here. 90 mins.

  • Collective Presencing. Every Other Friday @ 8:00 AM ET. RSVP here. 90 mins.

  • Stoic Breath. Every Sunday @ 10:00 AM ET. RSVP here. 60 mins.

  • The Stoa After Socrates. Every Sunday @ 12:00 PM ET. RSVP here. 90 mins.
